Heat wave in Portugal – Lisbon gets cooler starting from 21 June
The most recent weather forecast by the Portuguese Institute of Meteorology brings hope for Portugal which has been struggling with an extreme heat wave.
After several days of temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius /104 Fahrenheit registered in many areas of the country, a 10 degrees drop will bring a much needed relief. Especially, in the central regions of Portugal, which since Saturday afternoon, June 17th, has been battling forest fires. The most affected area is a village of Pedrogão Grande in the district of Leiria, 190 miles northeast of Lisbon.
The extreme temperatures, together with the strong winds and dry thunderstorms helped to spread the fires in the area covered with dense forests, affecting also the neighbouring districts of Castelo Branco and Coimbra. 62 casualties were registered within 48 hours of the first outbreak, making it the deadliest so far forest fire in Portugal.
Although there is still no chance of rain in the nearest future, it is expected that starting from Wednesday, June 21st , the temperatures in Lisbon /central Portugal area will drop just below 30 degrees Celsius.
Some nebulosity can be expected closer towards the end of the week.
A similar weather is forecasted for Faro, in the Algarve, with only slightly higher temperatures, peaking 34 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, July 24th.
Only Porto, and the northern region of Portugal in general, will get a break from the oppressive heat, as the temperatures are expected to drop to 21 – 23 degrees Celsius in the course of the week. Light showers may occur on Monday, June 26th.
