Santos Populares – St. Anthony’s Feast in Lisbon
12/13 June
Ahead of the peak of the tourist season, June is a truly great month to visit the Portuguese capital. Taking advantage of warm weather, street parties, open-air concerts and art performances take place throughout the city and especially in Lisbon’s historic quarters: Alfama, Mouraria, Graça and Bairro Alto. The pinnacle of Santos Populares (the popular saints’) festivities are the celebrations of the city’s patron saint, Santo Antonio day. The night of June 12 is by far the most animated and joyful time in Lisbon’s cultural life. Stop by Avenidade de Liberdade to admire the carnival-like parade. Santo Antonio, or St. Anthony is a patron of marriage and many couples choose to wed on the 12 of June, making the parade a part of the wedding celebrations. Spend the rest of the evening in Lisbon old town, where the party with street dancing, food and the mandatory grilled sardines continues all the night through.
